Triangle Area Calculator Using Cross Product – 3D Geometry
Enter the coordinates of vertices A, B, C in 3D space. The solution builds vectors AB and AC, expands the cross product with 2×2 determinants, takes its magnitude and halves it to get the area.
The calculator above takes the coordinates of vertices A, B, C in 3D space and finds the area of triangle ABC with the cross product. The solution shows six steps: write the coordinates, build the two edge vectors, expand the cross product with 2×2 determinants, take its magnitude and halve it. The answer is given in exact radical form and as a decimal with four places. Press Example to load Example 1 below.
📐 What is the cross product?
The cross product of two vectors in 3D space is a vector perpendicular to both of them. It is written u × v; Vietnamese textbooks write [u, v] for the same vector.
Given u = (u₁, u₂, u₃) and v = (v₁, v₂, v₃), the cross product is the formal determinant:
📊 Triangle area formula in 3D space
Let triangle ABC have vertices A(xA, yA, zA), B(xB, yB, zB), C(xC, yC, zC).
Step 1: Build two edge vectors from vertex A
Step 2: Compute the cross product
AB × AC = (u₁, u₂, u₃) where:
Step 3: Find the magnitude
Step 4: Find the area

Example 3. Checking for collinear points
Problem: Given M(1, 2, 3), N(2, 4, 6), P(3, 6, 9), find the area of triangle MNP.
The vectors are parallel, so the cross product is the zero vector:
Points M, N, P are collinear and do not form a triangle. Enter these numbers in the calculator and the solution stops after step 4 with a degenerate-triangle message.
🎯 Real-world applications
1. Computer graphics
3D models are meshes of small triangles. The cross product gives both the area of each face and the normal vector used for lighting and shading.
2. Engineering and architecture
Find the area of sloped roof panels, stairs or space frames from surveyed point coordinates.
3. Physics
Torque, the magnetic (Lorentz) force and rotational motion are all written with the cross product.
4. Geography and mapping
Estimate the area of terrain when the surface is split into a triangular mesh in a 3D coordinate system.
📚 Key properties of the cross product
- Anti-commutative: v × u = −(u × v). Swapping the order only flips the sign, so the area does not depend on the order of the vectors.
- Perpendicular: (u × v) ⊥ u and (u × v) ⊥ v.
- Magnitude: |u × v| = |u|·|v|·sin θ, where θ is the angle between the vectors. So the triangle area also equals ½·AB·AC·sin A.
- Parallel vectors: u × v = 0 if and only if u and v are parallel.

❓ Frequently asked questions
How is the cross product different from the dot product?
The dot product is a number: u · v = u₁v₁ + u₂v₂ + u₃v₃. The cross product is a vector perpendicular to both original vectors, and its magnitude equals the area of the parallelogram they span.
Why do we divide by 2 when calculating the triangle area?
The magnitude |AB × AC| is the area of the parallelogram with sides AB and AC. Diagonal BC cuts that parallelogram into two equal triangles, so the area of triangle ABC is half of it.
Can this formula be used for triangles in the Oxy plane?
Yes. Set z = 0 for all three points. The cross product becomes (0, 0, u₃) with u₃ = (xB − xA)(yC − yA) − (yB − yA)(xC − xA), and the triangle area is |u₃| divided by 2.
How do I know if three points are collinear?
Points A, B, C are collinear if and only if AB × AC is the zero vector, which means the triangle area is 0. The calculator above stops after step 4 and reports a degenerate triangle in that case.
Is this formula accurate for all triangles?
Yes. It works for every triangle in 3D space: acute, obtuse, right, isosceles or equilateral. Any vertex can be the shared one, so AB × AC, BA × BC and CA × CB all give the same area.
