Formulas used
VAT = Net × t, Gross = Net × (1 + t)
Net = Gross / (1 + t)
- t is the tax rate as a decimal, for example 10% = 0.10.
- Never subtract t% of the gross price to remove tax; divide by 1 + t instead.
Worked example
A gross price of 1,100 includes 10% VAT:
Net = 1,100 / 1.1 = 1,000, VAT = 100
